"THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES THE CRITICAL NEED FOR NATIONAL HEALTH SECURITY BY DEVELOPING A LOCALLY PRODUCED ANTIDOTE FORMULATION FOR THE TREATMENT OF ORGANOPHOSPHATE (OP) POISONING AND CHEMICAL WARFARE AGENT (CWA) EXPOSURE. ORGANOPHOSPHATE COMPOUNDS ARE WIDELY USED AS AGRICULTURAL PESTICIDES AND ARE ALSO THE BASIS OF HIGHLY TOXIC NERVE AGENTS. ALTHOUGH EFFECTIVE MEDICAL COUNTERMEASURES ARE AVAILABLE, DEPENDENCE ON IMPORTED ANTIDOTE SUPPLIES AND INTERNATIONAL SUPPLY CHAINS CREATES STRATEGIC VULNERABILITIES DURING PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCIES, INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS, AGRICULTURAL POISONING INCIDENTS, AND POTENTIAL CHEMICAL WARFARE SCENARIOS. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO ESTABLISH LOCAL EXPERTISE IN ANTIDOTE FORMULATION DEVELOPMENT. THE RESEARCH WILL FOCUS ON IMPROVING FORMULATION PERFORMANCE, EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE ADMINISTRATION ROUTES SUCH AS TRANSDERMAL AND INTRANASAL DELIVERY, AND DEVELOPING USER-FRIENDLY DELIVERY SYSTEMS FOR RAPID ADMINISTRATION IN BOTH CIVILIAN AND MILITARY SETTINGS. THE EXPECTED OUTCOME IS A SELF-RELIANT NATIONAL CAPABILITY FOR PRODUCING EFFECTIVE ANTIDOTE FORMULATIONS, ENABLING TIMELY TREATMENT OF OP POISONING AND NERVE AGENT EXPOSURE, IMPROVING PATIENT SURVIVAL, AND STRENGTHENING MALAYSIA'S PREPAREDNESS AGAINST CHEMICAL EMERGENCIES.
